Coto joined the Showtime drama series Dexter in 2010 as a writer/executive producer for the fifth and sixth seasons. Coto continued his work as a writer/executive producer on the sixth and seventh seasons of Dexter, which aired in 2011 and 2012.

Coto is a graduate of the American Film Institute. He has extensive experience in sci-fi, fantasy and other genres. Coto and Brian Helgeland sold The Ticking Man for $1 million in 1990. However, the film never saw production. He directed and wrote Tales from the Crypt’s episode. In 1995, he also produced and wrote an episode for The Outer Limits. After The Outer Limits had been cancelled, he was offered the opportunity to write and create a Showtime series. The result was Odyssey 5, which starred Peter Weller. (Coto would later cast Weller on Enterprise 24, and Dexter).
Coto joined Enterprise’s writing team in 2003 when it was in its third year. His episodes include “Similitude”, the “Chosen Realm”, and “Azati Prime”. Later that season, he was promoted to co-executive producers. He was named executive producer of the series’ fourth season, along with Rick Berman and Brannon Braga. StarTrek.com says that he is a Star Trek fan since childhood and has even written a Star Trek comic book.
He is the creator and executive producer of NeXt, which will premiere as the fall schedule of 2020 on Fox.
